If you’ve already taken the first abortion pill and now a different feeling is settling in, you may still have time to explore abortion pill reversal (APR). Because treatment is most effective when started as soon as possible, it’s important to seek help right away.

Contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network’s 24/7 hotline at 877-558-0333 to speak with someone immediately. You can also reach out to Pathways Pregnancy Resource Center in to discuss your next steps and available support.

What Is Abortion Pill Reversal?

A medical abortion happens in two steps. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, the hormone a pregnancy needs to keep developing. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken later and causes cramping and vaginal bleeding that expels the pregnancy.

Abortion pill reversal (APR) is intended to interrupt that process after the first pill but before the second. It uses progesterone to outcompete the mifepristone already in your system and support the pregnancy. Doctors have used progesterone to help support pregnancies for decades.

Why Timing Matters

APR is only an option if you have taken mifepristone and have not yet taken misoprostol. The protocol works best when it begins within 24 hours of the first pill. Some women have seen success starting within 72 hours, so even if a day has already passed, it’s worth asking.

The sooner you reach out, the more options you may have. If you started the abortion pill and changed your mind, acting quickly is the most important thing you can do.

What to Expect

Reversal usually starts with confirming the pregnancy, often through an ultrasound that shows how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is continuing. From there, a provider can walk you through progesterone treatment.

Some spotting can happen during this time, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the reversal won’t work. However, heavy bleeding, severe pain, or fever are signs to seek medical care right away.
