Feelings of grief, regret, and sadness after an abortion are more common than people realize. Many women express relief at first, but as time passes, they begin to regret it. If you’re struggling with post-abortion emotions, it’s vital to understand that your feelings are valid.
Here’s what one anonymous Reddit user had to say:
“Help! It’s been a week since my SA [surgical abortion] at 8 weeks. I felt so clear on the day of the procedure, but I’m feeling so empty and regretting my decision. Someone, please tell me it gets better.”
No matter where you are in this process, resources and people are ready to support you with compassion and respect. Pathways Pregnancy Resource Center provides no-cost, confidential post-abortion support. We’ll help you find what you need, without judgment or pressure.
You Need More Than Time to Heal
Well-meaning friends say, “Give it some time. You’ll feel better after a month or two.” However, time doesn’t have the power to heal; it just passes. You need to take steps toward healing.
If you’re struggling physically after an abortion, it’s crucial to visit a doctor. The same goes for struggling emotionally. You should consider speaking to a counselor, a trusted friend, or a family member.
Women don’t often talk about their abortions for fear of judgment and rejection. They isolate the experience, keeping it to themselves for protection. But the best way to begin healing is first to acknowledge your feelings.
There is no right or wrong way to feel. Admit that you are emotionally struggling, confide in someone who can help you, and begin your healing by recognizing that feelings of sadness, anger, grief, and guilt are valid.

Healing Suggestions
Your pain needs an outlet. You need to be able to process the sadness and grief. Here are a few suggestions:
- Exercise. Evidence suggests that exercise can help you find freedom from the pain of loss. Physical activities like running, walking, or dancing can help relieve stress.
- Art as Therapy. Art therapy provides an outlet for self-expression and reflection. You can express your pain outwardly rather than holding it in.
- Journaling. Sometimes, when you put your thoughts down on paper, they become more real. Start a journal or diary of your thoughts.
- Hobbies. Is there something you love to do or have always wanted to do? Now is the time. Whether it’s gardening, cooking, playing music, or sewing, a hobby helps provide a measure of normalcy to your life.
- Self-Care. Focus on comfort foods, resting, and spending time in nature. Keep activities low-key, if possible.
